Video for Business - Making the most of video without blowing the budget

March New Media Breakfast - Video for Business

Making the most of video without blowing the budget

Date: Friday 27th March 2015
Venue: 29 Glasgow, 29 Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow
Time: 7:45am for 8:00am

At the last New Media Breakfasts, we asked the audience to complete a short questionnaire about the topic of future events, thank you to everyone who took part.

The results are very interesting and they have provided us with a good idea about what you would like us to talk about in the future.

The most popular topics chosen were Blogging, Google Analytics, and Video for Business, all of which polled the same number of requests. We will be covering all of these topics in the near future. We did do Blogging as recently as September 2014, so we thought we might leave it a couple of months before we revisit the topic. Google Analytics is something we will do soon, however for logistical reasons it is not possible to do this in March. That leaves Video for Business, which we have chosen to do in March

Video is becoming increasingly relevant and useful within social media. The introduction of 4G mobile services, and much better high speed broadband coverage are making it much easier to upload and consume video content. However, other influences such as the massive popularity of viral campaigns like the "Ice Bucket Challenge" in a way have educated many more people about how to capture and upload video content to social media channels. We believe this too has had an impact on the increasing popularity of video.

However, it's not just about viral charity campaigns, video is a powerful tool for business, it can get very real and credible messages to your community. It is also extremely useful for breaking down barriers and introducing yourself to potential new clients and customers.

Neither is video just about YouTube. There are many ways you can use video effectively across many platforms, the New Media Breakfast session will explore some of the cost effective ways you can use video to extend the reach of your messages.

At the March New Media Breakfast, we will explore some of the ways to capture and use video content without blowing the whole marketing budget. We will also look at how other companies are using it in innovate ways to create engagement and to get valuable messages to their communities.

If you are looking for new methods for reaching existing clients, or exploring better ways to reach a new audience, you should come along and see if video is something that can help you communicate in the future.

The Importance of Hashtags

If you want your business to get noticed when using social media, it is vitally important that you start to incorporate hashtags when sharing your content online. At fatBuzz we use them to help get your content to the right audience, and in this post we will share with you some hints and tips for using hashtags.

Now some would say that hashtags are just part of the “online lingo”. Which is of course true, we have all seen #NoFilter or #Selfie being used online. But the hashtag is much more than a modern colloquialism, it is an incredibly useful tool for connecting your business with the people you want to engage with.

With most major social networks now supporting the use of hashtags, including Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and Instagram, there has never been a better time to start using them!

Hashtags will serve as a hyperlink to other users on social media sites that search for the term.

If you start to think of hashtags as a conversation topic, they will allow people who are interested in the discussion to be able to quickly identify and engage with you.

For example, if you were wanting to engage about the Oscars this year, using the hashtag #Oscars2015 has a better chance of being seen by those interested in the awards as they can simply search for the hashtag and see your post.

In using hashtags you will be able to expose your content to a wider audience as you are channeling information to the right people. However, using them correctly is what can truly boost your business’s chance of engagement.

One key factor in using hashtags is to keep it brief. Overlong and overdetailed hashtags simply won’t catch on. You want yours to be a clear and concise summary of the topic/event you are talking about.

You also shouldn’t be using more than two hashtags at a time. Studies have shown that when you use more than two hashtags, engagement drops by 17% on average. A quality summary will always be better than a high quantity when it comes to hashtagging.

If we look at the Oscars example again, picture yourself searching for a term to see who has won best actor. Are you more likely to look for #WhoHasWonTheOscarForBestActor or #OscarWinners?

It is that simple, and getting yourself into this habit will make sure that your hashtags are relevant and easy to find. If you stick to using keywords in yours it will make for a much more engaging hashtag.

Remember as well to use existing hashtags to connect with your audience. If your business is attending an event, look out for official tags and if you think they are relevant - use them! They are a great method of marketing yourself within an existing group.

We have covered the basics to help you in using hashtags on social media. The next time you post an update, a blog or tweet, we hope you try some of our tips and see for yourself how helpful using a simple hashtag can be. #GoodLuck!

Social Media Podcast 69 - Love is in the air!

In Social Media Podcast 69, Gordon is joined by Kyle and introduces the latest member of fatBuzz Liam Cutkelvin in this Valentines inspired “Love edition”. Fear not, this isn’t all about romance...this episode is all about the social media campaigns that we loved from last year.

We discuss the our favourite campaigns in social media from last year, including the Ice Bucket Challenge which took the internet by storm last year and raised millions for charity across the globe.

We also share our thoughts on the #NoMakeUpSelfie craze which swept social media and how it has had many positive aspects outside of its fundraising achievements. It is a terrific example of how a viral campaign can educate some social media users about how social media actually works.

This podcast also marks a change in format.  We outline what we plan for the future and discuss recent topics and news from in and around social media.

Here are some of the things we discuss:
  • The Ice Bucket Challenge - What we loved and the positives we can take from it
  • #NoMakeUpSelfie - Educating the masses
  • #fatBuzzlovesyou - Our Valentines red noses from last year
  • Curtis Moore Christmas video - The benefits of having some fun on Social Media
  • Superbowl XLIX - Officially the biggest on twitter, what we remember from it on social media and how brands are linking in with the event
  • Gordon's social media challenge
  • Twitter introduces instant timeline - Is this a positive move?
  • Twitter CEO Dick Costolo admits the platform isn’t great dealing with trolls - Is there a real way to tackle this issue within social media?
  • The need to gather data and are you really building a direct relationship with your consumers on platforms like Facebook?
If you have something you would like to discuss, or you would like to join us on a future podcast, please email Liam Cutkelvin at liam@fatbuzz.com  We are always looking for interesting content and news, so please share any relevant info with us so that we can share it with the Social Media Podcast audience.
